The September CPI report allows the calculation of the cost of living allowance (COLA) percent change for 2020. Starting in January 2020, recipients of Social Security benefits can look forward to a 1.6% COLA. The third quarter average of the CPI-W is 250.200 compared to 246.352 in the July-September period of 2018.
The increase will be the smallest since up 0.3% in 2016, and less than the up 2.8% in 2018 and 2.0% in 2017. On average a normal year is around up 2.0%. This doesn’t compare too unfavorably.
