E-commerce topped 10% of all retail sales for the first time in the first quarter 2019, up to 10.2% of the total after a 9.9% share in the fourth quarter 2018.
E-commerce sales were up 3.6% in the first quarter from the fourth quarter 2018, outpacing the flat reading for total retail. Year-over-year e-commerce sales were up 12.4%, about the same as the up 12.1% in the fourth quarter.
Consumers continue to embrace on line shopping. Some of it may be voluntarily due to convenience and/or personal preference, and some may reflect the contraction in the brick-and-mortar retail sector what has reduced access to shopping venues.
