There was no change in the number of workers on strike in the March survey reference period for the employment report data. There were 1,700 workers in an existing strike, but no new strikes and no strikes ended. There will be no impact for the upcoming Employment Situation on Friday, April 5 at 8:30 ET.
The recent teachers strike in Oakland lasted 7 days, beginning March 4. Teachers would have been on payrolls before and after Saturday, March 16 that constitutes the end of the survey reference period. Thus the strike was not counted. The BLS page for strike data says, “The data in this report relate to workers directly involved in large strikes who were idle during the entire pay period which includes the 12th of the month.”
